Cycling For Fun and Fitness - How to Get Started
By Steve Morse
If you need to get into better shape, lose some weight, or just want a hobby that will get you outdoors to enjoy some fresh air, cycling is a great way to accomplish all those goals at once. Personally, it has been a great activity that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Sometimes just getting started will get you hooked so that you never want to stop in this fast paced sport.
First you need some equipment. If you are just getting started and are not sure if you will like it or stick with it, you can find a good used bike off of Craigslist or eBay. you will also want to research the type of bike you will need for the style of riding you intend to do, off-road, paved, or a mix - make sure you have the proper equipment or you risk injury to yourself or damage to your bike.
Next you will want to explore local riding areas. My family enjoys riding the miles of local paved trails that start close by our home. Many towns have recreational trails for hiking and biking, which makes for a very enjoyable experience as you get into shape.
You will want to start slow as you begin your riding regimen, start with just a couple miles per day for the first few weeks and work up to 8 or 10. Make sure you take a day of rest and only ride 5 or 6 days per week, as well.
As you work up to longer and longer rids, you will need to make sure that you have plenty of water or other hydrating fluids with you - you don't want to become dehydrated miles from home. Other recommended things to carry with you are: your id, a small selection of tools, spare tube, emergency tire pump, and cell phone.
Once you get used to riding daily, you'll get stronger and feel great - watch the pounds melt away!
